The Chamber - out now on Blu-ray and DVDA small US special ops team commandeer a research submersible, searching for an unspecified object in hostile North Korean waters. The experienced pilot of the sub, Mats (Johannes Kuhnke – “Force Majeure”), reluctantly joins the covert mission and is kept in the dark. Mats expresses grave warnings about the aging sub’s capabilities and fears that without proper planning, the military team’s agenda could lead to disaster.

Red, the leader of the three-person spec ops team (Charlotte Salt – The Musketeers, Casualty) seems level headed but her colleague Parks (James McArdle – “’71”, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”) is twitchy and aggressive. The third member is Denholm (Elliot Levey – Da Vinci’s Demons, Man Down), a man with some piloting skills of his own. The writer/director is Ben Parker, shooting his debut feature.

Those viewers who suffer from claustrophobia or indeed a fear of drowning should probably not watch this film, because it does a very good job of convincing the audience that they are right there, in cramped and creaking sub. I felt like I was gasping for breath in some scenes as the characters battle for survival in a nightmarish scenario.

The plot might be quite slight but the actors do a terrific job of keeping the tension high and the action is gripping from start to finish. The director avoids over-using darkness or flickering lights, and the majority of the film is shot in a quite bright but still moodily-lit set.

The soundtrack by the Manic Street Preachers’ frontman, James Dean Bradfield, also does a superb job of maintaining atmosphere and cranking up the tension at key moments. With waves swelling hundreds of feet above, the music pounds the senses as the pressure builds inexorably.

This is a commendable and confident first feature by Parker, and definitely singles him out as a name to watch in the future.

Special features include:

  • Beneath the Surface of The Chamber – making-of featurette
  • Audio commentary by writer/director Ben Parker

The making-of highlights the challenges involved in shooting a film where the actors spend much of the running time immersed in various depths of water, in a very confined set. Rather them than me!
