Smuggler on DVD

Sunday, 30 March 2008 13:14

Set during the Napoleonic wars of the early 1800s, Oliver Tobias (Arthur of the Britons) stars as Jack Vincent, a swashbuckling ex-British naval captain turned smuggler. A strong-willed, independent man who lives by both his wits and the sword, Vincent is ably assisted by Sarah (Lesley Dunlop – who played Anna Kirkwall in Where the Heart Is) and petty thief Honesty Evans (Hywel Williams Ellis) in his struggle to stay one step ahead of the Excise Men in this new release from Network DVD.

Smuggler on DVD from NetworkA fondly remembered series, Smuggler was a hit with both children and adults alike on its original transmission in 1981. With taut, adventurous plots from the show’s creator Richard Carpenter (Robin of Sherwood), Bob Baker (Doctor Who) and John Kane (Dick Turpin), the series was directed by Dennis Abey (Robin of Sherwood), Jim Goddard (Fox) and Charles Crichton (Space: 1999).

The episodes on this set were transferred from the best available film elements, and the colour has been re-graded to restore the look of the original television transmissions. There's still a lot of surface dirt and scratches, though, so it's not as pristine as it could have been.

Music came from Denis King, Producers were Paul Knight and Sidney Cole, and Executive Producer was Patrick Dromgoole. There was also a 12 part sequel series in 1987 called Adventurer – no doubt already on Network DVD’s “to do” list.
