Angus Thongs & Perfect Snogging

Georgia Nicholson (Georgia Groome) is a 14 year old school girl. She is not one of the cool girls, she doesn’t have a boyfriend and she has to put up with her weird parents and her little sister who insists on dressing up Angus, her cat. When two new boys start at her school Georgia and her best mate Jas (Eleanor Tomlinson) decide that they must have them as boyfriends. Whilst Jas manages to net one of the boys quite easily Georgia hits a snag when the other, Robbie (Aaron Johnson), starts going out with another girl.

There follows a series of attempts by Georgia to get her man, involving bad spray on tans, huge pants, snogging lessons, and Angus being taken for a walk on a lead.

Angus Thongs and Perfect SnoggingMeanwhile Georgia’s parents played by Alan Davies and Karen Taylor are having their own problems. Dad leaves for a job in New Zealand and mum apparently has an affair with a very handsome builder played by Steve Jones. So all in all Georgia’s life is quite complicated.

Based on Louise Rennison's books this film is a refreshingly British take on the coming of age gross outs that America churns out ad infinitum. It could be called Bridget Jones – The Teenage Years as the style has many similarities. The original books were written in diary form and the film does contain some narration from the lead character. The heroine gets herself into ridiculous predicaments all in the quest for a boyfriend and a perfect snog.

Anyone who was ever a teenager, which most of us were, will remember the anguish that goes with those formative years. The growing pains, the emotions, the realisation that your parents kiss each other and maybe do other things! All this is covered here.

The young cast under the direction of Gurinder Chadha ("Bend it like Beckham", "Bride and Prejudice") is excellent. Georgia Groome leads a cast of relatively unknown young actors who maintain a high standard throughout. You may recognise Kimberly Nixon from Cranford playing a very different role here as the boyfriend stealing Lindsay.

The snogging lesson is something that has to be seen to be believed, Georgia visits Peter Dyer (Liam Hess) for a half hour session of full on kissing with tongues. The resulting saliva overload will have you very conscious of the last time you played tonsil hockey.

Angus, the cat does manage to act everyone off the screen with his scene stealing performances as drag queen, cowboy and cat stuck in fridge. With a single look Angus can convey so much emotion it is Oscar worthy. And Libby, the little sister played by Eva Drew is very sweet, not the normal brat you would get in an American film.

Extras include a good commentary from the director and some of the cast which is chatty and fun. Several shorts including one about Angus, and one about the worry that some of the young actors had about those ‘first kisses’ as a few of the actors were really kissing boys for the first time!

This film would be great to watch curled up on the sofa with cup of hot chocolate. Although I can imagine it might be cringe worthy if watched with parents who begin to question what their little girls get up to when not in their sight and then have to come to terms with the whole not so little any more concept.

This film is never gratuitous; there are plenty of mentions of bazoomers and ‘nice bums’ but nothing that will cause any harm or offence. And for some adults it may even be a bit of an education. Recommended viewing for any 12-15 year olds, and perhaps their parents should have a look too, just to find out what the little darlings might be getting up to.

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is out on DVD on 8 December 2008, priced £15.99, or less from
