Hellsing Ultimate 4

An envoy from the Vatican’s Iscariot Division is invited to a Roundtable conference chaired by the Hellsing Organisation and Her Majesty, the Queen of England.  Major Max Montana, Millennium's Leader, uses this opportunity to send Alucard and the Hellsing Organisation a declaration of war.  Millennium capture the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle, flagship of the Royal Navy, and invite the British Empire to retake her if they can; or, as my fellow ice hockey fans would say, "Come ‘n’ have a go if you think you're hard enough!".

I’m pretty certain that in making Hellsing Ultimate people have deliberately set out to make each volume contain more blood and gore than the previous one; in fact they ‘up’ the content to such an extent that I’m not surprised that this time round the people at the BBFC have given it an 18 certificate from the start.

Hellsing Ultimate 4 DVDThe artwork and the concepts are graphically stunning but give a macabre quality to the whole piece, which may disturb some viewers.  However, even with the shock factor rising almost exponentially with each volume the plot manages to run continuously through the background.  At times it runs deep, but that just draws me in further and makes me wonder about the people behind this series - it cleverly weaves together myths and legends along with modern Hollywood movies and classic literature.

Hellsing was one of the few anime series I like to watch dubbed, when they set the scene in England I used to enjoy listening to the English voices, so it’s unfortunate that sometimes here people have taken things little too far.  Someone seems to have decided that caricaturing the accents in the dub to such an extent, that it makes them almost comedic, is a good idea.  Hopefully they will not continue this trend in future but go back to more serious voice acting, as they have with the character of Rip whose dub voice actress manages to portray the character with all her flaws and helps you feel more for the character and her fate.

I’m not normally a fan of opera but here the score uses some operatic music to full effect amongst the eclectic range of music from classical orchestral pieces to dance/house beats, which swells or moves to the background to compliment the animation and plot.  This leaves you with a well presented animation that is balanced with no component overwhelming any of the key elements I look for in a series.

If you’re looking for a traditional type of reviewer rating, I’d say 4 out of 5.
