The Losers DVD & Blu-ray

It’s intriguing that a movie such as “The Losers” should come out at around the same time as the big screen version of “The A Team”. There are considerable similarities between the two, and no doubt this has to be put down to parallel development rather one production cribbing from another. What both have in common is these are two movies that deserve your attention during 2010.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, memorable to cult audiences as The Comedian in “Watchmen” is Clay, the equivalent of Hannibal Smith, leading this crack team of experts within a US Special Forces unit. Idris Elba (Luther) is Roque, Chris Evans (Human Torch in the “Fantastic Four” franchise) is Jensen, Columbus Short (Darius in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) is Pooch, and Spanish star Óscar Jaenada is Cougar. Helping the team achieve their objectives is Zoe Saldana (the new Uhura in “Star Trek”) as Aisha.

The Losers - out now on DVD and Blu-ray“The Losers” is described by the press release as “the ultimate action-comedy”, and is based on the comic from Vertigo, the DC Comics imprint, the characters having been created by hot writer Andy Diggle.

The team are sent to the Bolivian jungle on a search-and-destroy mission. It’s a tale of double-cross and revenge, the team find themselves the target of a lethal betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as ‘Max’, played by Jason Patric famous as Michael in “The Lost Boys”).

Presumed dead when a rescue goes terribly wrong, the group makes plans to even the score when they're joined by the mysterious Aisha, a beautiful operative with her own agenda.  Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.

This is definitely one of those movies that can be described as ‘high octane’.  There are some good twists in the storyline that I genuinely didn’t see coming. You can certainly define this as a fun film, although it certainly can’t be pigeon-holed as family viewing, as in amongst the rough-and-tumble, there are a couple of really harrowing scenes.  War is hell – it helps you remember that.

For collectors, there are two limited edition Blu-ray and DVD combipacks.  One includes a Losers comic, and the other will include special artwork designed and printed by animator Jock.

DVD and Blu-ray extras include the following:

  • Zoe and the Losers;
  • Action Style Storytelling;
  • Band of Buddies: Ops Training;
  • Band of Buddies: Transforming Puerto Rico;
  • Band of Buddies: Going Deep into the Action;
  • Deleted Scenes;
  • Trailer; and
  • Audio Commentary with Andy Diggle and Jock.
