Colombiana comes to DVD

Flashback to 1992, and the country of Columbia. Nine-year old Cataleva witnesses her parents being murdered. Using some excellently honed gymnastic skills and an already-developing bad attitude, she escapes the massacre. Taking refuge in the USA with Emilio, her gangster uncle, we fast-forward 15 years later, where Cataleva now works for him as a ‘hit woman’. She draws an orchid drawn on the chest of her victims as a calling card – hoping this message will be picked up by the killers of her parents.

Zoe Saldana, who as we all should know is Uhura in JJ Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek, is getting plenty of lead rolls these days.  “The Losers” was a good ensemble piece, playing Neytini in “Avatar”, but there’s no doubt that “Colombiana” is designed to be her starring vehicle. And we had three copies of the DVD to give away in a competition, in celebration of it being one of the first titles to be reviewed on Cult TV’s first broadcast television series – Behind The Sofa.

Colombiana comes to DVD and Blu-ray“Colombiana” is an action thriller from director Olivier Megaton (“Transporter 3”) and writer/producer Luc Besson (“La Femme Nikita”, “The Fifth Element” and also the “Transporter” series) plus long-time co-writer Robert Mark Kamen.

In the employment of her uncle, Cataleya works her way up through the criminal underworld, taking out every bad ass loon in her path, engaging in an obsessive quest to bury the man who she believes destroyed her life.

Although the action is very by-the-numbers, it is very intense, and Saldana is given plenty to work with in terms of playing a very tortured character.

We get to see plenty of Zoe in the film, in the shower, swimming with sharks, and so forth – you get the picture. Well-supported by extras on the Blu-ray release, we have the obligatory “Making Of”, plus a brief look into the character of Cataleya in the film, Zoe Saldana discussing what it’s like to play an assassin in the film and working with Luc Besson, and another featurette on training for the fight scenes in the film. There’s also a look at filming around the world and working with an international crew.

“Colombiana” is from Entertainment in Video on DVD (RRP £19.99) and Blu-Ray (RRP £24.99). The film has a ‘15’ certificate, a running time of 107 minutes on Blu-ray (103 minutes on DVD). Both formats have “The Making of...” and the Trailer, while the Blu-ray also has a “picture in picture commentary”.

Thanks to Entertainment In Video, you could have been the winner of one of three copies of the DVD that we hadavailable in our prize competition, which also celebrated the fact that “Colombiana” was one of the first titles to be reviewed on Cult TV’s new series Behind The Sofa (Sundays at 8.00pm-9.00pm on Sky Channel 200 from 15 January 2012 for six weeks, repeated Wednesdays at 7.00pm and Saturdays at 9.00pm).

All you have to do is answer the following question: Who does Zoe Saldana play in the Star Trek franchise? The answer was Uhura, and the three lucky winners were Gary Caslin of South Wirral, Geoff Leone of Arbroath, and Annamaria Lewis of Derbyshire.  Well done all, and look out for more competitions at this website!
