Mr and Mrs Murder - out now on DVDAustralian crime-comedy series Mr & Mrs Murder follows the exploits of a married couple who specialise in cleaning up gruesome crime scenes. Charlie and Nicola Buchanan do not just tidy-up, they also happen to be excellent at solving murders, with a keen eye for detail and a knack for teasing information out of people. The sassy couple are played by Shaun Micallef (Danger 5, Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation) and Kat Stewart (Supernova, Offspring).

Currently airing on Channel 5 USA, each episode sets the scene with a hastily-dispatched victim and then the duo's ToxiClean van rolls up. Charlie and Nicola sport head-to-toe protective coveralls and come armed with an assortment of industrial cleaning products. Rather ineffective Detective Peter Vinetti (Jonny Pasvolky - "Mortdecai") and Nicola's niece Jess Chalmers (Lucy Honigman - The Ex-PM) complete the regular cast.

The tone of the show is very light, making it ideal fare for relaxing mid-afternoon TV. Whilst notionally the murders themselves can be quite grim, nothing is shown on-screen, and the Buchanans typically spin everything into a joke whether they mean to or not. They are a very smart pair, bouncing ideas and word play off one another, frequently wandering off on a tangent that sometimes triggers a new vein of enquiry.

Micallef and Stewart have fantastic chemistry and feel like a real couple who have been living and working together for many years, and still love each other and what they do. This bond is critical to the success of the show, especially when the plotlines sometimes run out of steam, or some of the guest characters lack dynamism.

The comic book title sequence is great fun, conjuring up memories of the Grange Hill open credits, and the theme music perfectly captures the way the team tip-toe around the crime scenes looking for clues before becoming more daring as they home in on the perpetrator. With Jess in tow they inveigle their way into places they ought not to be, through guile or impersonation.

Sadly it seems that Mr & Mrs Murder will end after just one season, but do not let that put you off as it is very entertaining, and as with most crime series half the fun comes from trying to work out “who done it”.
