Super Gran 1 on DVD

In a tirade of recent releases, Network DVD has been doing its darnedest to plug all the gaps left in our memories of children’s television of the 1970s and 1980s.  The latest release sees, for the first time ever on, the children’s comedy Super Gran – The Complete First Series hits the shelves.

Granny Smith (Gudrun Ure) is a sweet old lady living a sedate life in the Scottish coastal town of Chisleton. One day, she is accidentally struck by a stray beam from Inventor Black’s magic ray machine and transformed into ‘Supergran’ - the possessor of amazing powers, super-human strength, and even a magic ‘flycycle’! She puts these to great use in the fight against Chisleton’s local villain, The Scunner Campbell, and his unpleasant cohorts, Dustin and Muscles; with Supergran’s miraculous abilities, however, defeating the baddies is not usually too much of a challenge!

Super Gran Series 1 DVDAlongside regular cast members Iain Cuthbertson and Bill Shine, Supergran also features an array of guest stars including George Best, Lulu, Spike Milligan, Charles Hawtrey, champion strongman Geoff Capes and, in his final television appearance, Patrick Troughton.

The show’s catchy theme song, performed by Billy Connolly, helped to ensure that it remained firmly in viewers’ memories long after it was first broadcast, and gained Connolly a number 32 chart position.

Produced by Tyne Tees Television, for Children's ITV, kids who were at a certain age enjoyed the series immensely; however, this was not necessarily true for the adults who also had to tune in. Its basis of slapstick humour was relied on perhaps too much, although this can be forgiven on the basis of the guest stars that the series managed to attract to its ranks.

This complete first series of Supergran was originally aired on ITV in 1985 and is now available in a 2-disc set, with a running time of 350 mins approx, and a RRP £19.99, or less from
